Organization Manages Trust Fund for Persons With Disabilities02.02.2008
It started with a court order that provided millions of dollars to residents of a city-run facility for individuals with disabilities. But, for many of them, enduring squalid conditions and inhumane care would be a cakewalk compared to an existence without much-needed public benefits-Medicaid and SSI funding now threatened as a result of a long-anticipated financial settlement. Fortunately, local advocates were successful in establishing a special needs pooled trust to manage, invest and disburse the windfall which would provide access to good and services we all take for granted.

Statewide Program Offers Free Medications Through Unique National Partnership

When the working poor in South Carolina need medications, Communicare bridges the gap. This innovative non-profit organization not only provides prescription medications to working adults who don't qualify for government benefits or can't afford health insurance, but works with volunteer dentists to give "smiles" to children whose families don't have access to quality dental care. Both programs creatively use existing resources, local volunteers and Fortune 500 pharmaceutical firms to put health care in reach for thousands of needy citizens.
